Last week six finalists went head-to-head, pitching their ideas for ‘businesses for good’ to a panel of judges, in front of a live audience, and the third-place prize went to Eliot Hardwick (Fashion Communication) and Jess Woods (Fashion Design) for Dead Ugly Designs, a circular, gender-neutral, street-style clothing brand. Arielle Uno-Ekwang, a Fashion with Business Studies BA(Hons) graduate, is one of six trainees beginning a “nine-month paid training journey that will see participants immersed in responsible design and craftsmanship principles”.
Textiles student Harriet Silverson, along with classmate Alice Clubb, has been awarded a Framework Knitters bursary for yarn for her final collection – and Harriet is going to create a series of playful samples that explore the crossover of art, emotion, and knitted textile design.

“After college I was working in Savile Row, while I was there, I became interested in suiting cloth. I then decided to leave to study textile design, while knowing I wanted to specialise in weave. The best aspect of my course was the full technical cover, ensuring that there was always a technician in the studio to assist you and making sure you where able to get on with your work.” Read More

“I was the only kid in our rural farming community to have a toy ironing board, which my parents point out regularly was a clear indicator. I chose fashion design because it blends form and function. What drew me to the University of Brighton was seeing the fashion graduates who were creating work that was beautifully made and had a strong identity.”
